deepdream.c
Alexander Mordvintsev
This image was rendered by Alexander Mordvintsev on 18 May 2021, the 6th anniversary of the DeepDream creation. The starting image and the neural network match those that were used for the creation of the first DeepDream images. The code that drives the generation process is itself an artistic experiment. It’s called “deepdream.c” and is built using the set of technologies that were already available more than 30 years ago, but still widely and actively used today at the basis of our software infrastructure. The code relies on C89 standard and the minimal set of language library features. It’s designed to be as self-contained and easy to build as the “Hello, World!” program. The artist hopes that this kind of software would be possible to build and run long after his physical death.

Alexander Mordvintsev (b. 1985) is a researcher and artist whose work closely interweaves machine learning, computer graphics and vision, and emergent phenomena. Inspired by life rewriting its own code and the endless space of possibilities at all scales, he explores the artistic capabilities of AI that were not originally thought of or intended by its originators. He is best known for his creation, in 2015, of the DeepDream algorithm, which inspired the new wave of artists experimenting with AI and Hexells, a self-organizing system of cells that are trained to build textures upon interactive touch. Mordvintsev has taken part in exhibitions at international venues such as the Barbican Centre, London (2019), and Gray Area, San Francisco (2016). He currently works at Google Research on questions of designing artificial self-organizing systems. Mordvintsev lives and works in Zurich.
